We know that it is difficult to give when most of you have been furloughed, laid off or uncertain of what the future may bring. We are asking for a part of your federal stimulus money that you may receive to go to workers who have been excluded from the federal stimulus bill. These are day laborers, domestic workers, janitors – workers without social security numbers – and sex workers who were explicitly excluded from the CARE act by Republicans.

The Alliance for Social and Economic Justice – a collaboration of the San Francisco Living Wage Coalition, Trabajo Cultural Caminante, Radio Flash, Informacion es Poder, Global Women’s Strike, and the Bay Area Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador – cultural workers and community organizers based in the Redstone Labor Temple, at 16th Street and Capp, at the epicenter where some of the most impacted low-wage workers are located.

We have had the recent experience working with the Day Labor Program of making cash payments to more than 50 day laborers. From this, we developed protocols to provide mutual aid in a reasonably safe manner. We found that many of the immigrant men did not have dependents, at least in this country, so they would not be eligible for the city Family Income Relief Fund.

Global Women’s Strike, which has been organizing sex workers, has found a similar outcome.

The Alliance for Social and Economic Justice is putting out an urgent appeal for donations – including clothing, soap, cleaning supplies, women’s hygiene products, and food – both nonperishable and perishable, including cooked. We have the capacity in the Redstone Labor Temple to heat food and put it in to-go containers for day laborers who do not have access to kitchen facilities. At this point, we are requesting drop-offs of donations, which we can pick up at curbside, until we have the capacity to do pick-ups. Call 415-863-1225 to schedule a time for a drop-off.

And we are appealing for donations of money to provide direct cash payments to workers excluded from unemployment compensation and federal assistance. You can make a contribution using the Paypal button at the top. All donations are tax-deductible.
